StreamSets Cloud platform overview

Overview

StreamSets Cloud was a complete reimagining of the StreamSets platform — a tool for designing, running, and monitoring data pipelines at scale. The existing product had grown organically over several years, and the jump from on-prem to cloud gave us a chance to rethink core flows from the ground up: onboarding, pipeline design, monitoring, and team collaboration.

Key Features

Four major feature areas drove the redesign: a new pipeline canvas, rich telemetry and monitoring, collaborative workspaces, and an onboarding experience that could guide first-time users without getting in the way of experienced ones.

Process & Iteration

Every major flow went through rapid iteration cycles — whiteboard sketches, mid-fi Figma prototypes, and usability sessions with internal engineers and pilot customers. The pipeline canvas went through five distinct iterations before we locked on a direction that balanced screen real estate with the density of information experienced users wanted to see.

First-Time User Walkthrough

One of the hardest problems was onboarding. New users landed in an empty workspace and had no idea what to do first. We built a lightweight, contextual walkthrough that introduced the concept of pipelines with a working example — so the first thing you saw was data actually flowing.
